Yoga Nidra And The Consciousness Limbo

Remember: every yoga nidra session is different and there really isn’t an absolutely ‘right’ way to do it.

So, what is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga nidra isn’t what you’d expect when you hear the word “yoga”. You aren’t going to be physically moving your body in different positions or really being active in any sort of way. You will likely be lying in the pose called “shavasana” which is similar to corpse pose.

I personally, recommend having a pillow under your head and knees for ultimate comfort. Depending on your needs, you may find it easier to practice in bed, on a recliner, on a couch or the traditional way of a yoga mat on the floor.

During a session you will be listening to a guided meditation technique that will get you to access a delta wave state or as I like to call it “the consciousness limbo”. This is where some very magical things can happen!

During these delta wave states, your brain and body do so much healing and restoration. We usually see this during sleep. It’s rather amazing that you can access this with yoga nidra.

Yoga nidra can also help bring your nervous system in to a parasympathetic state. This is especially helpful for those of us with nervous system dysregulation.

Okay, but how do I know I’m doing it right?

While you will see that it is often stated that you should remain awake during yoga nidra, I have found that those of us healing through chronic illness benefit by simply giving the body what it needs. If you fall in and out of sleep during the practice, don’t worry! This is very beneficial since it is likely what your body and nervous system need at the time.

Every yoga nidra session is different and there really isn’t an absolutely “right” way to do it.

In fact, don’t get caught up in trying to have “perfect” yoga nidra sessions. That is not necessarily soothing or calming to your nervous system, which is the opposite of what we want.

Go with whatever the flow is that day! The benefits over time are substantial.

If you’re a total beginner, I would recommend you start with shorter sessions (10-25 minutes) and gradually go up. Play around with the time of day as some folks benefit most from night, morning or mid day or a mix of them.

I already know the basics, Claudia! What else ya got?

Alright, if you know your basics on yoga nidra and are simply here for my juicy list of favorites practitioners – have at it!

The List of Yoga Nidra Practitioners

These are some of my personal favorite yoga nidra practitioners! All of us will have different practitioners which we find best for us. This is simply a good list to get you started or help you find a new practitioner you may have not known about!

I’ve included the numerous ways you can find their content – though, my favorite is often Insight Timer which is free and has 0 ads and runs on a great community based model.

In no particular order, let’s check them out:

If you have looked just about anywhere for Yoga Nidra, you are sure to have come across Ally. She makes amazing and decadent sessions and I absolutely recommend giving her a try.

Kristyn Rose has a very calming voice and is another one of my absolute favorite yoga nidra practitioners. Her sessions are soothing and with just enough space to float in.

Natalie Moon brings soft and lovely yoga nidras to us on Insight Timer and does live sessions – so, watch out for those under events in her profile!

Ayla Nova is absolutely lovely. She has healed from cancer and traumatic brain injury and shares her yoga nidra guidance partially through this self healing practices lens. I really appreciate her podcast for easy access yoga nidra’s!

With over 30 years of experience Kamini Desai, PhD is amazing. She is considered an expert in yoga and is the developer of the I AM yoga nidra technique. She’s also published books on yoga nidra and has an app specifically for her guided yoga nidra’s.

Sarah Eiler has a lovely soothing voice and her yoga nidra sessions are at a slow luxurious pace. She also weaves in visualizations which I definitely love.

With just over 20 years of experience, Kumari Sky teaches both yoga and yoga nidra. Her yoga nidra’s are relaxing and well guided.

With 15 years of experience, Jennifer Piercy brings deeply relaxing yoga nidra (especially those for sleep!) She is a sleep and dream educator as well.

Loren Runion is an ex registered nurse who fell in love with yoga nidra and now teaches people it with passion. She has a great combination of different yoga nidra themes and time frames.

Nid is a brain injury survivor who healed and dedicated herself to helping others with yoga nidra, soul guidance and energy work. Her yoga nidra’s are spiritual, expansive and lovely. She also has her own Nids Nidra app which can be found on her website link above.

Sandeep has over 8 years experience as a certified yoga & meditation instructor and his yoga nidra sessions are lovely. He blends traditional with modern insight.

Nikolina has an amazingly soothing gentle voice. She is a yoga nidra practitioner that blends gratitude and gentle guidance.

Em healed from a nervous system illness and is now teaching yoga nidra in hopes of helping others like herself. I find her yoga nidra guided practices to be so relatable and useful.
